How does AllerGuard determine if a medication is gluten free?
AllerGuard analyzes medication data from DailyMed, the official U.S. government source for drug labeling. We extract both ingredient information to flag substances that may contain gluten based on our internal research and comparison against known gluten-containing excipients. In addition, we scrape and review drug label images to identify medications that are explicitly marked “gluten free” by the manufacturer. While we have consulted with healthcare professionals during development, please note: we do not provide medical advice, and our platform should not replace guidance from a licensed pharmacist or physician. Medication formulations can change at any time, so always verify gluten status with your pharmacist before taking any new medication.
How can I get support if I have an issue?
You can contact us through the “Contact” feature in the footer of the page.
How often do we update our data?
We update our data every month to ensure accuracy while managing our resources effectively.
Why does the barcode scanner not have all medications?
Our barcode (UPC) database is community-driven, while our NDC code search pulls from DailyMed’s comprehensive, government-backed source that includes all OTC and prescription medications. Unfortunately, there’s no universal, reliable source that directly maps UPCs to NDCs, which makes building this part of our database more challenging.
That’s where you come in! If you scan an OTC medication and it’s not found, try searching by NDC code instead (it should be there). Then, help us grow by reporting the missing UPC through our Contact feature so we can get it added to the database
