We called and emailed Gaviscon’s manufacturer Haleon to determine the gluten status of both their liquid and tablet products. Haleon stated their product is not end tested for gluten. Haleon also stated, the sorbitol in the products may be derived from either corn or wheat (see further breakdown below).

Quick Rundown
Product is not end tested, so no gluten free guarantee.
The supplier states sorbitol may be derived from wheat or corn, “however the sorbitol is highly processed and does not contain gluten.”
The caller was not able to give me any information regarding cross contamination.
Labeled gluten free option below.
What The Manufacturer Stated:
Phone call: “Can confirm sorbitol may be derived from corn or wheat but material is highly processed and gluten is not present. The product is not end tested for gluten. I am not aware of cross contamination practices in facility.”
Email: “Following a review of the product formulations and detailed supplier documentation, we confirm that Gaviscon Extra Strength formulations* contain one ingredient (sorbitol/mannitol) which may be derived from corn or wheat. However, our supplier has declared that the material is highly processed, and gluten is not present.
We can also confirm Gaviscon Extra Strength formulations do not contain ingredients derived from dairy (including casein and whey).
*Applicable to Gaviscon Extra Strength Cherry Solution, Gaviscon Extra Strength Cool Mint Solution, Gaviscon Extra Strength Cherry Chewable Tablet, Gaviscon Extra Strength Chewable tablet”
AllerGuard Statement:
The customer service representative was unable to provide detailed information regarding gluten status. I’ve requested a follow-up from their “medical team” to clarify potential cross-contamination risks and to gather any additional details. I will update this article with details from the medical team if I receive an answer.
Although many celiac and gluten free individuals report using Gaviscon with no issues, because there is currently no confirmation of cross-contamination controls, I recommend considering an alternative product at this time. While sorbitol is highly processed and unlikely to contain gluten, this ingredient alone does not guarantee a gluten free final product. Please use your discretion and consult with your healthcare provider when deciding whether this product is appropriate for you.
A Gluten Free Aluminum Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide Alternative:
Unfortunately, I could not find a product specifically labeled gluten free on the box or packaging that contained the exact ingredients as Gaviscon. However, Mylanta’s website states their Maximum Strength Liquid Antacid/Anti-Gas is gluten free. There is no gluten free label on the actual medication bottle or within the medication packaging though. Again, please use your discretion and consult with your healthcare provider when deciding whether this product is appropriate for you.

Unfortunately, this falls into one of those gray areas we often face with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. At this time, I’ve been unable to identify a clearly labeled, definitively safe alternative (aside from what Mylanta provided on their website). While many people may tolerate these products without issue, my goal is to share the most complete information possible for those who prefer to be extra cautious.
I’m hopeful we’ll receive clearer guidance from Gaviscon soon, and I plan to reach out to Mylanta for a future update. Thank you for your patience and for being part of this community, we’re navigating this together.
